Autobiography and essays of Priddy Meeks, 1879-1886.

Facsimile of assorted writings by Priddy Meeks, most of which were written between 1879 and 1886 and cover the years from 1812 to 1886. The majority of the manuscript consists of Meeks' autobiography, which covers the 1830s to the 1880s. It includes accounts of Meeks' decision to "go doctoring;" his conversion to Mormonism; his travels to Utah and medical assistance he provided along the way; the difficulties of pioneer life in Utah; extended notes on hunting expeditions; interactions with Indians at Parowan; Meeks' moves from Parowan to Harrisburg and Leeds; his medical practices in Utah and theories for the advancement of midwifery; and repeated references to demoniac possession, seerstones, evil spirits, and witches. Some additional writings include an essay called "A Short History of Dr. Meeks' Practice of Medicine," which includes case studies of patients and Meeks' goals for his future medical practice (he calls himself an "anti-Poison man;" charts including medical notes and a list of progenitors; a brief account of the exploring expedition to Longvalley in 1852; and a genealogical account of Meeks' family compiled in Washington County, Utah, in 1879.
